Deep depression to cross Andhra-Odisha coast tonight

A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is likely to cross the north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coast between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur, near Kalingapatnam, on Wednesday night, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The system has not developed into a cyclone yet. The IMD has forecast that it will cross the coast as a deep depression, making the use of the name ‘Cyclone Arnab’ premature at this stage. ‘Arnab’ is the name assigned to the next cyclonic storm to form over the North Indian Ocean.
The system was centred over the westcentral and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal on Wednesday morning, about 60 km southeast of Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. It is moving west-northwestwards towards the coast.
The system is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rain to parts of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.
In south Odisha, heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast at several places on September 23 and 24, with isolated extremely heavy rainfall also possible. Heavy to very heavy rain may continue at isolated places on September 25 and 26.
Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam are also expected to receive widespread rainfall, with heavy to very heavy rain at several places and isolated extremely heavy rainfall on September 23 and 24.
The system is also expected to cause strong winds and rough seas. Winds along the north Andhra coast may reach 25-30 knots, with gusts of up to 40 knots. Very rough seas are likely over the westcentral and northwest Bay of Bengal until the evening of September 24.
Rough to very rough sea conditions are also expected along and off the north Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal coasts.
Several districts in Odisha have taken precautionary measures as heavy rain and possible flooding are expected. Schools and Anganwadi centres have been closed in some districts, while authorities have strengthened preparedness in vulnerable areas.
The system is also expected to affect parts of West Bengal with rain and gusty weather, although the state is not expected to be the landfall area.
For now, the main concern is the deep depression's impact through heavy rainfall, strong winds and rough seas, rather than the possibility of it being named Cyclone Arnab.
