Tension escalates outside Tarique Rahman’s hotel centering BNP, banned AL's protests

Supporters of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and activists of the banned Awami League staged processions and exchanged slogans outside the hotel in New York where Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is staying, triggering tension in the area.

The confrontation took place on the main road in front of the hotel on Wednesday evening local time. Police were quickly deployed to prevent any escalation.

BNP and its affiliated organisations had been holding processions and chanting slogans in support of the government outside the hotel for the past two days.

However, Awami League activists appeared on the opposite side of the road and staged a protest for the first time. 

The rival demonstrations and slogans heightened tensions in the area, prompting police to take up positions to prevent an untoward incident. The Awami League supporters left the area shortly afterwards, and the situation later returned to normal.
