Debashish Roy Chy sworn in as permanent HC Judge

Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury has been sworn in as a permanent judge of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court.

Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury administered the oath at the Supreme Court Judges’ Lounge on Thursday morning.

Judges from both the High Court and Appellate Division were present at the ceremony. The Supreme Court identifies Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury as the country’s 26th chief justice. SSlot

Earlier on Monday (September 21), President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir appointed Debashish Roy Chowdhury as a permanent High Court judge in consultation with the chief justice under Article 95 of the Constitution.

Roy Chowdhury had been appointed an additional judge of the High Court Division on October 8, 2024. He was subsequently appointed a permanent judge after fulfilling the applicable age requirement. According to reports, he had not been made permanent earlier because he had not yet reached the required age of 45. 

After obtaining a law degree from Britain, he enrolled as an advocate of the district courts in 2005, the High Court Division in 2007 and the Appellate Division in 2018.

He is the eldest son of Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury.

With his appointment, the number of judges in the High Court Division has risen to 100.
