Bangladesh seeks a new treaty with India on Ganges water sharing rather than a renewal of the existing agreement, Water Resources Minister Md Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee said on Thursday (September 24).

Speaking at a programme on rivers in Dhaka, the minister stated that a new treaty must include a guarantee clause to protect national interests.

Highlighting the economic importance of rivers, Minister Anee stated that rivers serve as a major driving force of the country's economy. However, industrialization and climate change continue to exert adverse impacts on them. He called for identifying the root causes of river pollution and pointed out that restoring the Buriganga River remains a major challenge.

During the event, officials disclosed that Dhaka city generates 3,900 million liters of wastewater daily. Out of this, 1,500 million liters directly flow into rivers untreated, resulting in financial losses worth billions of dollars annually.
