Dhaka calls for stronger women’s leadership in peace, security

Bangladesh has called for greater and more meaningful participation of women in decision-making to ensure sustainable peace and security.

It also stressed the need to strengthen women’s participation in peace processes, women-led early warning and mediation initiatives, and accountability for violence against women. 

Foreign Affairs State Minister Shama Obayed Islam made the remarks UN Women. It focused on strengthening implementation and accountability on the 25th anniversary of the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 132 at the annual ministerial meeting of the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Focal Points Network at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Wednesday (September 23), local time.

The meeting was organised on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly at the initiative of the Philippines, Italy and UN Women. It focused on strengthening implementation and accountability on the 25th anniversary of the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security.

In her remarks, Shama Obayed recalled Bangladesh’s pioneering role in supporting Resolution 1325 as an elected member of the UN Security Council in 2000.

She reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to ensuring women’s meaningful participation at different levels of decision-making.

The state minister also called for stronger integration of the WPS agenda with climate action and humanitarian initiatives.

She further underscored the importance of strengthening accountability for various forms of violence against women.
