Mother dies after son attacks with cleaver in Rajshahi

A 55-year-old woman was killed after her son allegedly attacked her with a cleaver during an altercation over his decision to visit his in-laws’ house in Rajshahi.
The deceased was identified as Mosammat Jannatun, 55. Her son, Aminul Islam, 32, was detained by police in connection with the incident.
Jannatun’s husband, Mujib Sardar, was also injured while trying to restrain his son. He was taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for treatment.
The incident took place around 1:00 AM on Thursday night in Sardarpara village under Mougachhi Union of the district.
Quoting locals, police said Aminul, who was reportedly suffering from mental health problems, told his family that he wanted to go to his in-laws’ house. His father, Mujib Sardar, tried to stop him, leading to an argument.
At one point, a scuffle broke out between Aminul and his parents. During the altercation, Aminul allegedly attacked his mother with a cleaver, leaving her critically injured. His father was also injured by the sharp weapon while attempting to restrain him.
Neighbours rescued the injured and took them to hospital, but Jannatun died on the way. Mujib was admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where he is receiving treatment.
With the help of locals, police detained Aminul after the incident and took him to Mohanpur Police Station.
Rajshahi Additional Superintendent of Police (DSB) Sabina Yasmin said, "Jannatun was injured by a cleaver during an altercation between Aminul and his parents over his plan to visit his in-laws’ house."
"She died on the way to hospital,” the police official said, adding that Aminul had been detained and a case would be filed over the incident.
