World Lung Day today

World Lung Day 2026 will be observed today (Friday) with a call to protect lung health throughout life and strengthen efforts to prevent tobacco and nicotine use, mainly among young people. 

This year’s observance carries the theme “A Lifetime of Lung Health”, highlighting the importance of protecting the respiratory system from early life through old age. 

Lung and respiratory diseases remain among the leading causes of premature death worldwide, with tobacco and nicotine use identified as major risk factors for a range of serious conditions. 

In Bangladesh, lung and respiratory diseases account for two of the country’s five leading causes of death, according to Bangladesh Sample Vital Statistics 2023. 

World Health Organization (WHO) has also warned both active and passive smoking pose serious risks to lung health.
