Fuel price hike triggers fresh rise in daily commodity prices

Rising fuel prices and increased transport fares have triggered a fresh surge in the prices of essential commodities, including flour, rice, and eggs, worsening the plight of low-income consumers.

Retail markets across the capital show that packaged flour prices have risen by Tk 10 per kg over the past week, with wheat flour now selling at Tk 70 per kg and refined flour at Tk 80 per kg.

Although transportation costs have increased by only a few poisha per kilogram due to higher diesel prices, traders are hiking retail prices by full rupee amounts.

Wholesale rice dealers at Karwan Bazar reported that truck rentals from northern districts have gone up by several thousand Taka, which will soon push up rice prices in the retail market.

Similarly, the cost of transporting puffed rice and other dry foods from outside the capital has risen, creating pressure on wholesale and retail rates.

Supply shortages persist in the edible oil market, as dealers reportedly restrict supply in anticipation of a potential price adjustment by the government.

Egg prices remain exceptionally high, with a dozen farm eggs selling at Tk 160 and four eggs priced at Tk 55 in retail shops.

Prices of packaged liquid milk have jumped by Tk 10 per liter, while imported fruits such as tangerines, oranges, and apples continue to trade at elevated rates.

Consumer rights activists and economists have called for strict government monitoring and immediate cost-impact analysis by the Tariff Commission to stop dishonest traders from exploiting the fuel price hike.

National Consumer Rights Protection Directorate officials stated that market supervision will be intensified to prevent traders from taking undue advantage of transport cost increases.
