Australia score first goal against Brazil, concede late equaliser

Australia came within seconds of making history against Brazil on Friday, scoring their first-ever goal against the five-time world champions before conceding a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville.
Nestory Irankunda put Australia ahead in the 68th minute with a shot that found the back of the net, giving the Socceroos their first goal against Brazil in their recent meetings.
However, Brazil rescued a draw deep into stoppage time when Rayan headed home from a Raphinha cross in the 95th minute.
The two sides had previously met several times, with Brazil dominating their recent encounters. At the 2006 World Cup, Brazil won 2-0, with Adriano and Fred scoring.
They met again in 2013, when Brazil produced a 6-0 victory. Jo scored twice, while Neymar, Luiz Gustavo, Ramires and Alexandre Pato also found the net.
Their most recent meeting before Friday came in June 2017, when Brazil won 4-0. Diego Souza scored twice, while Thiago Silva and Taison were also on target.
Brazil had therefore scored 12 goals without conceding in those three matches.
Australia finally broke that run in the 68th minute when Irankunda's effort beat the Brazilian goalkeeper. The Socceroos appeared set to secure a historic victory, but Rayan's late header denied them the win.
The teams will meet again on September 29 at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, just four days after Friday's match. The second fixture is part of a two-match international series between the sides in Queensland.
