NCP’s Tanvir alleges torture in custody

Former National Citizen Party (NCP) joint member-secretary Gazi Salauddin Tanvir, who was expelled from the party multiple times over various offences, has alleged that he was subjected to physical torture, medical neglect and inhumane treatment during detention in police custody and prison.

Speaking at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity in Segunbagicha on Friday, Tanvir claimed he was tortured from his arrest on August 5 until his release on September 15.

“Countless injections were administered to my body. I do not know what kind of injections they were. I was given at least 70 to 80 injections,” he claimed.

He alleged that he developed a persistent fever and that an injection left his right arm and leg numb. Doctors at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura, he claimed, diagnosed him with a stroke, but prison authorities allegedly dismissed the condition.

Tanvir also alleged that he was served stale food, developed diarrhoea and was given unidentified tablets instead of prescribed medicines. He further claimed that he remained unconscious for 10 to 12 hours after an MRI and later regained consciousness in a prison cell soiled with urine and faeces.
