Fountains planned instead of surrender monument at Suhrawardy Udyan

The Liberation War Affairs Ministry has proposed installing water fountains instead of sculptures at the sites marking Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s March 7 speech and the surrender of Pakistani forces at Suhrawardy Udyan.

The proposal is part of a plan to revise the ongoing Independence Monument construction project, according to a ministry progress report dated August 6.

The project, launched in 2018 and scheduled to run until June 2027, originally included two sculptures at the historic sites. Construction was halted after the change of government in August 2024.

The ministry has also proposed changes to the 3D holographic presentation of the March 7 speech. The project’s estimated cost stands at Tk 397 crore, with financial progress reaching 75.91% and physical progress 94% as of June 2026.
