Former Cantonment OC remanded for 2 more days in sedition case

A Dhaka court on Monday placed former Cantonment Police Station OC Inspector Rakibul Hasan on a fresh two-day remand in a sedition case filed over allegedly spreading anti-state and provocative statements on social media.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ishrat Jahan passed the order after a hearing.

Rakib was produced before the court after completing a five-day remand. Investigation Officer Inspector Md Jihad Hossain of the Detective Branch’s Gulshan Zonal Team sought a fresh three-day remand, saying the accused had provided important information during interrogation.

The investigator also said a 4-minute-29-second audio recording allegedly involving Rakib had been seized and that his voice needed to be compared with a sample for further investigation.

Defence lawyer Morshed Hossain Shahin sought cancellation of the remand and bail. The court rejected the bail plea and granted the two-day remand.

Earlier on September 24, the court had granted Rakib five days’ remand after police sought seven days. The case was later transferred to the DB for investigation.

According to the FIR, Rakib allegedly made derogatory and provocative remarks against the state and government during an audio conversation with an unidentified person. The recording was later circulated on social media.

He was subsequently removed as Cantonment Police Station OC and attached to the DMP headquarters. A sedition case was later filed against him with permission from the Home Ministry.
