Swift, Madonna shine at MTV VMAs

Taylor Swift and Madonna were among the biggest winners at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, with Swift taking home Video of the Year and Madonna leading the night with seven awards.
Held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, the ceremony was hosted by Snoop Dogg and featured performances from Madonna, LISA, RAYE, Yung Lean, Shaboozey and others.
Swift won Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia” and also received the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors. She later premiered her new music video “Patient Zero,” featuring Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell.
Madonna, who received the most nominations, took home seven awards, including Artist of the Year, Best Dance, Best Long Form Video, Best Album, Best Cinematography and Best Choreography. She also opened the ceremony with her first VMAs performance since 2003.
K-pop star LISA won Best Pop for “Dream”, while British singer Sienna Spiro was named Best New Artist. BTS won Song of the Year for “SWIM”, as well as Best Group and Best K-Pop.
Other major winners included Ariana Grande, who won Song of Summer for “hate that i made you love me”; Bruno Mars, who won Best R&B for “I Just Might”; Bad Bunny, who won Best Latin for “NUEVAYoL”; and Olivia Rodrigo, who won Best Alternative for “the cure.”
The ceremony also honoured Nirvana with the Video Vanguard Award. Surviving members Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear accepted the award, with Novoselic acknowledging the enduring influence of late frontman Kurt Cobain.
The show also featured tributes to George Michael and Dolly Parton, with Kacey Musgraves performing a tribute to Parton and RAYE, Sombr, Teddy Swims and Adam Lambert taking part in the George Michael tribute.
