Former Chhatra League leader arrested from hospital

Police arrested a former leader of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League from a private hospital in Chattogram on Monday morning.

Mohammad Hasan, 38, a former general secretary of the Chhatra League’s Hathazari upazila unit, was arrested from Parkview Hospital at around 10:30 AM, police said.

Family members said Hasan’s wife had been admitted to the hospital to give birth. After the baby was born, the newborn was taken to the NICU, while his wife, who had a pre-existing heart condition, was moved to the CCU.

Hasan went downstairs to buy medicine when several people identifying themselves as members of the Detective Branch (DB) took him away, according to his family. They also alleged that he was not allowed to contact his family afterwards.

CCTV footage from the hospital, circulated on social media, purportedly shows Hasan being dragged out of the hospital.

Parkview Hospital Deputy General Manager Humayun Kabir said the hospital’s security guards asked the men to show their identities and they presented DB identification cards. The hospital authorities do not know why Hasan was arrested, he said.

Hathazari Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Zahidur Rahman said Hasan was handed over to the police station on Monday night. He was shown arrested in three cases filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act, while he also faces other cases.
