California adds both Eids to state holiday list

California has added Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha to its state holiday calendar after Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 2017 on September 27.

The law recognises the first day of Shawwal as Eid al-Fitr and the 10th of Dhul Hijjah as Eid al-Adha.

The recognition does not mean all government offices, schools, courts or private businesses must close on the two Eid days.

Under the law, Muslim students who miss school to observe Eid will have their absence treated as an excused absence. Schools and community colleges may also decide locally whether to close for Eid.

Assemblymember Matt Haney introduced AB 2017 in February 2026. The bill passed the Assembly 64-1 on May 26 before receiving Senate approval and being sent to the governor.

Newsom signed the bill on September 27, adding the two Eid festivals to California’s state holiday framework.
