North Korea to send 10,000 more troops to Russia

North Korea is preparing to send another 10,000 troops to Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said.

Zelensky said on Monday that more than 8,000 North Korean troops are currently on Russian territory. In a post on X, he said new information had emerged about North Korea’s troop deployment, with additional personnel being selected and prepared for training before being sent to Russia.

In August, Zelensky said North Korea could send up to 50,000 troops to fight alongside Russian forces. He also urged South Korea at the time to provide assistance to Ukraine’s air defence capabilities.

South Korea announced a $100 million aid package for Ukraine in July, though the assistance did not include lethal weapons.

According to Ukrainian and South Korean estimates, North Korea has sent around 14,000 to 15,000 troops to support Russia’s war effort since 2024. Most of them have been deployed in Russia’s Kursk region, where they have been assisting Russian forces in countering Ukrainian military operations.
