A supertanker carrying more than two million barrels of oil caught fire after striking a naval mine in the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) navy has claimed.
The vessel had switched off its navigation and radar systems and ignored Iranian warnings, the IRGC navy said in comments carried by Iran’s Fars news agency.
The claim came after the IRGC reported that two other tankers had caught fire after hitting naval mines in the strategic waterway.
However, a spokesperson for US Central Command told Al Jazeera that the earlier claim was “incorrect”.
