Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir, has arrived in the Iranian capital Tehran amid rising tensions across the Middle East.
He arrived in Tehran on Tuesday, Iran's semi-official Mehr News Agency reported.
According to the report, the main objective of the visit is to strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation between the two countries.
Earlier, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said Munir's visit was part of efforts to improve relations between the two countries.
Asked about speculation over whether the visit was intended to convey a political message or demonstrate military strength, Baghaei said the two countries might have different items on their agendas. However, he noted that discussions were primarily focused on bilateral relations.
He also underscored the importance of ties between the neighbouring countries and stressed the need to expand cooperation.
Munir's visit is being viewed as significant amid ongoing tensions involving Iran, the United States, the Saudi-led coalition and Yemen's Houthi rebels.
Pakistan previously played a mediating role in efforts to ease tensions between Washington and Tehran following military hostilities between the two sides. Against this backdrop, regional developments and bilateral cooperation are likely to feature prominently in Munir's discussions during the visit.
