4 killed in road mishaps in two dists

Four people were killed and another was injured in separate road accidents in Narayanganj and Barishal districts on Monday.

NARAYANGANJ: A motorcyclist was killed and his co-rider injured after the bike crashed into a road divider on the Third Shitalakshya Bridge in the district late Monday night, police said.

The crash occurred in the Saidpur area of Narayanganj Sadar Upazila as the motorcycle was heading from Narayanganj toward Bandar. Police said the rider, Shamsul Haque, died at the scene after losing control of the speeding motorcycle. The injured passenger, Suman, was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Shamsul’s body has been kept at the Narayanganj General Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Police said legal proceedings are underway.

On the other hand, a 50-year-old unidentified woman was killed after being run over by an unidentified vehicle while crossing the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway in Siddhirganj around 6 pm on Monday.

The woman was crossing over the highway divider near the Madaninagar 10-storey building area despite a nearby footbridge when the speeding vehicle struck her, killing her instantly.

Shimrail Highway Police recovered the body and sent it to the Narayanganj General (Victoria) Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Police said the woman was wearing a black burqa and her identity has yet to be established. They are also trying to identify the vehicle involved.

BARISHAL: Three young men were killed on Monday evening when their motorcycle collided head-on with a passenger bus in Wazirpur Upazila of the district.

The crash occurred around 6 pm in the Atipara area on the Barishal-Dhaka highway. The victims were Tawhid and Sourav of Atipara Village and Muttakin of Dhamsar Village, police said. Locals said the three were close friends who appeared for the SSC examinations this year.

An eyewitness, Selim Sardar, said a Surabhi Paribahan bus travelling from Barishal toward Dhaka collided with the motorcycle coming from the opposite direction. The bus driver and helper fled, he said.

Mohammad Rakibul Islam, officer-in-charge of Wazirpur Model Police Station, said police recovered the bodies and handed them to highway police.

Barishal Superintendent of Police AZM Mostafizur Rahman said legal action was underway to determine the cause and identify the bus driver and helper.
