Anee assures steps to check Dhaleshwari erosion

Water Resources Minister Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee has assured quick measures to prevent further erosion of the Dhaleshwari River in Sirajdikhan of Munshiganj, as several families face the threat of losing their homes.

The minister gave the assurance on Tuesday after Munshiganj-1 MP Sheikh Md Abdullah showed him the erosion-hit areas through a video call from the spot.

Abdullah was visiting Borbarta in Keyain Union of Sirajdikhan upazila around 9:30am when he saw strong river currents threatening homes and nearby structures. He then contacted Anee and showed him the extent of the erosion.

Anee assured the MP that the concerned authorities would take immediate steps to prevent further erosion.

He also said the government, local people, researchers and environmentalists must work together to protect the country's rivers and water resources.

During the visit, local residents told Abdullah about their fears and suffering caused by the erosion. They said two families had already lost everything, while several others were living in fear as the river continued to threaten homes and other structures.

The residents demanded immediate and permanent measures to protect the area from further erosion.

Sirajdikhan Upazila Nirbahi Officer Rumpa Ghosh, Upazila BNP General Secretary M Haider Ali, district Swechhasebak Dal General Secretary Siddiq Molla and other BNP leaders and activists were present during the visit.
