Two injured as students of two IU departments clash

Two people, including a teacher, were injured in a clash between students of the Bangla and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) departments at Islamic University in Kushtia on Wednesday.

ICT Department Professor Dr Shariful Islam was injured in the chest, while ICT student Abu Said of the 2021-22 academic session was seriously injured and lost consciousness at the scene.

The clash took place beneath the university's faculty building following a dispute between senior and junior students of the two departments a day earlier.

On Tuesday, students from the two departments had an altercation on the university's double-decker bus while returning to Kushtia. Later, teachers and students of both departments held a meeting at the proctor's office to resolve the dispute and reportedly reached an understanding.

However, shortly after the meeting, Bangla Department students allegedly attacked ICT teachers and students as they were leaving the faculty building, according to ICT students.

The incident led ICT students to gather at the main gate, where they remained for around one and a half hours before leaving after receiving assurances that their complaints would be addressed.

University Proctor Professor Dr Shahinuzzaman said the matter had been reported to the vice-chancellor and further action would be taken according to his decision.
