GM suspended over Tk 506cr electricity bill

The general manager of Magura Palli Bidyut Samity, Mohitul Islam, has been suspended over an electricity bill of Tk 506.83 crore issued for 235 units of power consumption.
The Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board’s controlling authority issued the suspension order on Wednesday and attached him to the office of the supervising engineer in Jashore.
Magura Palli Bidyut Samity AGM Fazlul Anwar confirmed the matter. He said Deputy General Manager Shaheen Ahsan of Mohammadpur Upazila Palli Bidyut Samity had been given additional responsibility as the GM.
The unusually high bill was issued in the name of Mst Aleya Khatun of Kechuadubi village in Magura Sadar’s Maghi Union for September. Based on the meter reading, her actual bill for 235 units should have been Tk 1,963.
The meter reading increased from 160 units on 8 August to 395 units on 8 September. After Aleya reported the unusual bill, the electricity office corrected the meter reading and issued a revised bill, which she paid.
Mohitul had earlier said four officials were served show-cause notices over negligence. They were a billing assistant, billing supervisor, meter reader-cum-messenger and the deputy general manager of the Arpara zonal office.
He said the abnormal bill was generated after a digit from the meter seal number was mistakenly entered in the demand charge field while changing the meter.
