Local Government State Minister Mir Shahe Alam has alleged that artificial fertiliser shortages were created in constituencies represented by Jamaat-e-Islami lawmakers.

Speaking to journalists during his first visit to Kurigram after taking charge on Wednesday, Shahe Alam said there had been no fertiliser shortage or movement over fertiliser in areas represented by BNP lawmakers.

He claimed that some dealers appointed during the previous government were involved in creating artificial shortages and said the government had decided to appoint one fertiliser dealer from each union to ensure smooth supply and prevent irregularities.

The government has also prepared to import fertiliser at one and a half times the country’s estimated demand, he said. The government has previously said fertiliser stocks are sufficient, while opposition lawmakers have raised concerns about distribution problems.

Shahe Alam also said local government elections would begin in January 2027 and be completed by 6 June.

Criticising opposition programmes over electricity and fuel shortages, he said the government was working to address the temporary supply problems.
