Three people, including two minors, were found dead in separate incidents in Tongi of Gazipur and Barishal on Thursday.

TONGI, GAZIPUR: Two children drowned in the Turag River in Tongi of Gazipur after going missing while fishing, with fire fighters recovering their bodies a day later on Thursday.

Fire Service and Civil Defence divers recovered the body of Abu Yunus, 10, and later that of Nirob, 9, from the river around 4:30 pm. Both lived with their families in a rented home in Tongi’s Bou Bazar area and were fifth-grade students at Shaheed Smriti High School.

The children went fishing under the railway bridge on Wednesday afternoon. Nirob fell into the river, and Abu Yunus jumped in while trying to rescue him. Both were swept away by the strong current.

Divers began a search on Wednesday evening but suspended it around 7:30 pm because of darkness, poor visibility and difficult conditions. The operation resumed on Thursday morning and ended with the recovery of both bodies.

Following a written request from the families and completion of legal procedures, Tongi River Police handed over the bodies without autopsies.

BARISHAL: Police recovered the decomposed body of a former government primary school teacher with her hands and legs tied from a rented house in the Moynapul area of Ward No. 4 in the city early Thursday.

Deceased Amena Khanam was a retired assistant teacher from a government primary school in Hizla Upazila.

Police recovered the body after relatives alerted them. Khanam had been living alone since her retirement. Her elder son, who lives in Dhaka, had been unable to contact her for several days and informed her cousin, Kolim Uddin.

Kolim Uddin went to the house on Wednesday night but found the door locked. Neighbours later noticed a foul smell and informed the house owner. Khanam’s son arrived from Dhaka and, accompanied by police, found the body early Thursday. Police sent the body to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.
