I Own a Flat, But The Loan Has Changed My Life

Amir Hossain Khan
I always dreamed of owning a flat. After years of living in a rented house, I finally decided to buy one with a bank loan.
But getting the loan was not easy.

I had to submit many documents, meet several conditions and go through a lengthy process. I had to arrange the down payment and wait for the bank’s approval. Getting the loan itself was a struggle.

At that time, I thought the biggest challenge was buying the flat. Now I realise that the real pressure started after I got the loan.

I have my own home today, and I no longer have to pay rent. But a large part of my monthly income now goes to the bank as a loan instalment.

The rent has been replaced by a much bigger financial commitment.
Every month, I have to make sure that the bank instalment is paid on time. It has changed the way I manage my family budget.

My wife and children have their own needs and wishes. But I cannot always fulfil them.

My children sometimes ask for new toys, gadgets, outings or other things. I often have to say no. It hurts because I want to give them what they want, but I have to think about the next loan instalment.

My wife also has many needs, but we now have to think twice before spending money on anything that is not essential.

Before taking the loan, I could save some money after paying my monthly expenses. Now saving has become much harder.

Food, education, transport, electricity and other household costs continue to rise. But my income does not increase at the same pace.

The bank instalment, however, has to be paid every month.
An unexpected medical bill, school expense or household repair can put me under serious financial pressure. I have to think carefully before spending even a small amount of extra money.

Sometimes I feel that I own the flat, but a large part of my income belongs to the bank until the loan is fully repaid.

Still, I do not regret having a home of my own. A permanent home gives my family security, and I wanted to leave something for my children.

But I wish I had understood the long-term financial pressure more clearly before taking the loan.
Anyone planning to buy a flat through a bank loan should calculate the entire cost, not just the price of the apartment. The down payment, interest, monthly instalment, registration fees, service charges and regular household expenses all need to be considered.

It is also important to keep some savings for emergencies. Owning a flat is a dream for many middle-class families. I achieved that dream, but it has come with sacrifices.

I have a home now, but I have had to give up many small comforts of life to keep paying for it.
My biggest hope is that one day the loan will be fully repaid. Then I will be able to enjoy my home without constantly worrying about the next month’s instalment.
