Chandpur Deputy Commissioner Ahmed Ziaur Rahman has said fishermen who catch mother hilsa in violation of the fishing ban during the breeding season will face at least six months in jail, along with possible cancellation of their fisher cards.

He made the remarks while chairing a meeting of the district task force on hilsa resource development at the Chandpur Deputy Commissioner's conference room on Thursday (October 1).

The meeting was organised by the district fisheries office ahead of the 2026 mother hilsa conservation campaign.

The deputy commissioner said authorities have decided to close the mouths of canals connected to the rivers and set up five temporary police camps in sanctuary areas to ensure safe breeding of mother hilsa.

He said fishermen who refrain from going to the rivers and catching mother hilsa during the ban would receive 25kg of food assistance each. A total of 41,390 fishermen in Chandpur will receive the assistance.

He added that measures would also be taken so that fishermen do not face pressure to repay loan instalments during the ban.

The 22-day nationwide ban on catching, transporting, storing, marketing and buying and selling hilsa will remain in effect from October 8 to October 29 during the peak breeding season.

In Chandpur, special monitoring will be conducted along a nearly 70-kilometre stretch of the Padma-Meghna rivers, from Shatnal in Matlab Uttar upazila to Charbhairabi in Haimchar upazila.

The administration, fisheries department, river police and Coast Guard will work together to ensure safe breeding of mother hilsa in the sanctuary.

District Fisheries Officer Md Fakhrul Islam said ice factories would remain closed throughout the 22-day ban, while dredging machines would not be allowed to operate in the rivers.

He said authorities would also monitor the rivers to prevent fishermen from outside Chandpur from entering the area to catch fish.

Authorities also plan to close the mouths of eight to nine important canals in the sanctuary area and set up checkpoints on major roads. A quick response team will remain ready to take immediate action if any problems arise during the campaign.
