Robert Lewandowski scored a hat-trick as Poland thrashed Romania 6-0 in the UEFA Nations League to secure their first win of the ongoing campaign.

The 38-year-old Poland captain opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 24th minute. He doubled the lead two minutes into the second half.

Poland made it 3-0 just two minutes later when Przemyslaw Frankowski’s shot deflected off Romanian defender Virgil Ghita and went into the net.

Piotr Zielinski, making his 112th appearance for Poland, scored the fourth goal in the 62nd minute. Defender Jan Bednarek added another four minutes later to make it 5-0.

Lewandowski completed his hat-trick in the 86th minute to seal a convincing 6-0 victory.

The match was Lewandowski’s 170th international appearance for Poland. His tally for the national team has now reached 92 goals, further extending his record as the country’s all-time leading scorer.

The victory took Poland to four points from three matches and kept them in contention for promotion to League A, the top tier of the Nations League.

Poland had begun their campaign with a goalless draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina before losing 3-1 away to Sweden.

Poland will face Bosnia and Herzegovina in Zenica on Monday. However, Lewandowski will miss the match after receiving his second yellow card against Romania and serving a one-match suspension.

The group winners will earn direct promotion to League A, while the runners-up will enter the promotion play-offs.
