Hundreds of protesters, including sadhus and sadhvis, gathered outside the Bangladesh mission in Kolkata on Saturday, demanding security for minorities in Bangladesh and the release of Chinmoy Krishna Das.
The protest was organised jointly by Vivekananda Mission Seva Pratisthan and the National Citizen Party of India (NCPI). More than 100 sadhus and sadhvis and around 60 NCPI supporters joined a procession that began at Sealdah railway station.
Police stopped the procession with barricades around 300 yards from the Bangladesh mission. Protesters then attempted to remove the barricades and move forward, leading to a scuffle with police. Traffic near the mission was temporarily halted as tensions rose.
Police prevented the protesters from reaching the mission. Later, with permission from the Bangladesh mission, a five-member delegation was allowed to enter and submit a memorandum demanding minority protection in Bangladesh and Chinmoy Krishna Das’s release.
The protesters continued demonstrating for some time before leaving the area.
The demonstration comes amid repeated protests outside Bangladesh’s mission in Kolkata over issues concerning Bangladesh.
