Argentina has announced a citizenship-by-investment programme offering citizenship to foreign investors who contribute at least $350,000 to the country’s National Treasury or invest $800,000 in a government bond.
Economy Minister Luis Caputo announced the programme on Friday (October 2) at an Argentina Week event in Paris. Applications are expected to open in the fourth quarter of 2026 as the government seeks to attract foreign capital and strengthen the country’s investment climate.
Under the programme, the $350,000 Treasury contribution will be non-refundable, while the second option involves purchasing a government bond created specifically for the scheme. Spouses and eligible children may also apply for citizenship through additional contributions, with the amounts depending on their age and status.
The government said applications would undergo due diligence and financial checks to verify the source of funds, ensure transparency and address money-laundering and security risks. The initiative is part of President Javier Milei’s broader efforts to attract foreign investment and increase dollar inflows.
Argentina’s programme is expected to become South America’s first citizenship-by-investment scheme. The move comes as the country seeks to attract more foreign direct investment; OECD data cited by AFP showed Argentina received $3.134 billion in FDI in 2025, below major regional economies such as Brazil and Mexico.
