Somalia will not allow Israel to establish a presence on its territory under any circumstances, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has said in an interview with Al Jazeera.
Mohamud said Israel was seeking to establish a naval base in Berbera and use the city’s airport. Berbera, a major port on the Gulf of Aden, is located in Somaliland, a self-declared republic in northwestern Somalia, across the water from Yemen and near the Bab al-Mandeb strait.
According to the Somali president, Israel’s activities in the area are aimed at strengthening its access to the Gulf states and Iran. He also linked the moves to what Israel calls the “Greater Israel” project, a term used for various proposals envisioning Israeli control over territories beyond its current borders.
Mohamud described Israel as a destabilising force and accused it of disregarding international law. Israel has not formally adopted “Greater Israel” as state policy, although Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in an August 2025 interview that he felt a connection to the vision, drawing condemnation from Arab governments.
