A man was found lying in a critical condition on the floor of Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Saturday evening, with patients, attendants and hospital staff reportedly passing by without helping him.

The man was found behind the hospital’s new building in a busy area. Witnesses said he remained there for some time despite people regularly passing through the area.

A hospital staff member, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the man appeared to be a vagrant and had no attendant with him.

The staff member alleged that some people around the emergency department compete to transport patients on trolleys and wheelchairs in the hope of receiving tips from their attendants, while unattended patients often receive less attention.

Several hospital sources said vagrant and unconscious patients are sometimes admitted to wards on the authorities’ instructions, but there is often no attendant to look after them.

The incident was brought to the attention of Dhaka Medical College Hospital Director Brigadier General AKM Farhad Hossain, who immediately took steps to arrange necessary assistance for the man.
