The United States has withdrawn all B-1 bombers deployed at RAF Fairford, a US airbase in the United Kingdom, the Pentagon confirmed on Sunday.
The development came after people living near the airbase were evacuated following a suspicious incident in the area, according to AFP.
A Pentagon official said in a statement that the US bombers deployed at RAF Fairford had returned to their respective bases in the United States.
“For security reasons, we were unable to immediately confirm the movement of our military equipment and personnel from the site,” the statement said.
Police were called to the airbase in southwest England last Sunday after a local farmer reported seeing several people engaged in “suspicious” activity involving a number of vehicles.
Following the incident, residents of 85 homes near the airbase were evacuated.
RAF Fairford has previously been used in US military operations, including strikes against Iran.
The incident sparked speculation about a possible terrorist attack or fuel theft, particularly amid soaring fuel prices in the UK.
Investigators said no explosives were found in the vehicles, but a large quantity of petrol was recovered from the site. Lawrence Taylor, head of the National Counter Terrorism Police, confirmed the discovery.
Five British nationals, all aged 20 and from London, were arrested in connection with the incident. They were later released on bail, prompting strong criticism from Washington.
Iran’s embassy in London rejected speculation that Tehran was involved in the incident and strongly condemned the allegations.
