Indian Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi scaled a police barricade in New Delhi on Tuesday (October 6) after security forces halted an opposition march heading toward the Election Commission of India (ECI) headquarters.
The incident unfolded after police blocked members of Parliament from the INDIA bloc, including Rahul Gandhi and his sister, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, on Parliament Street near Niti Aayog.
Following a high-voltage standoff, police briefly detained both leaders along with several other opposition lawmakers.
When police blocked the march using multi-layered barricades, Rahul Gandhi climbed atop one of the structures, raising the Indian national flag alongside Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee and other lawmakers.
Opposition leaders subsequently staged a sit-in on the road, carrying "Save Democracy" placards and chanting slogans demanding the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
Following their brief detention, the opposition leaders were released and relocated near the Akashvani Bhavan adjacent to the ECI headquarters. Taking to social media, Rahul Gandhi posted a message calling for the poll chief’s resignation.
The agitation stems from the ECI's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The opposition has accused the commission of procedural irregularities and altering voter registration forms, alleging that genuine voters are being disenfranchised. The ECI and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have rejected these claims, stating that the revision aims to purge duplicate and fake entries.
The row has also reached the Supreme Court of India. On Monday, a bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant issued notices to the central government, the ECI, and CEC Gyanesh Kumar in response to petitions challenging the SIR process, though the apex court declined to issue an interim stay against the CEC without thorough verification.
