Police arrested Humayun Kabir, main promoter of the Babri Mosque construction project and chief of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP), during voting in the Rejinagar assembly bypoll in West Bengal on Tuesday.
The arrest occurred on Tuesday (October 6) amid voting for the Rejinagar assembly seat in Murshidabad district. Humayun Kabir's son, Gulam Nabi Azad, is contesting the election as the AJUP candidate.
According to a report by The Indian Express, Kabir visited his party office in Rejinagar in the morning, where an argument broke out between him and police personnel on duty.
Police stopped Kabir when he tried to move toward a polling station. Officers stated that he was neither a candidate nor an election agent, and therefore had no legal permission to approach the polling booth.
Kabir accused the police of bias, claiming officers intimidated his party workers, booth agents, and voters. Speaking to journalists during polling, he alleged that police seized voter slips and identity cards while blocking voters from reaching polling centers.
A heated argument ensued, after which police detained Kabir and drove him away. The Indian Express confirmed that police later formally placed him under arrest.
Anandajit Hor, Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Beldanga in Murshidabad police district, confirmed Kabir's arrest, adding that details would be released later.
Police had previously registered multiple cases against Kabir and several leaders of his party. Following those cases, Kabir announced he would avoid field campaigning and instead campaign on social media from home. His son, Gulam Nabi Azad, had also announced a step back from public campaigning.
Kabir had been voicing concerns about police actions in Rejinagar well before the vote. The Times of India reported that police had questioned him earlier, and Kabir had expressed fear of arrest after several party colleagues were detained.
