3 brothers sentenced to death for Nandail murder

Three brothers have been sentenced to death and 10 others to life imprisonment for killing Shafikul Islam Sobir in Nandail of Mymensingh in 2015.

Mymensingh Additional Sessions Judge Court-1 Judge Md Shamsuddin delivered the verdict on Wednesday. The court also fined each of the 10 convicts serving life imprisonment Tk50,000, with an additional one year in jail if they fail to pay the fine.

According to the case statement and court sources, Sobir was hacked to death at a clothing shop owned by Chhafir Uddin on the eastern side of the ferry terminal at Char Velamari intersection in Nandail on February 25, 2015, following a land dispute.

The three death-row convicts are brothers Mozammel Haque Swapan, Apon Mia and Ripon Mia. The 10 others sentenced to life imprisonment are Abu Bakar Siddique, Kanchan Mia, Rubel, Parvez, Mofazzal Hossain, Kashid, Al-Amin, Sumon Mia, Nayan Mia and Asadul.

Ripon Mia, who was sentenced to death, and Asadul, who was sentenced to life imprisonment, are absconding.

A murder case was filed against 13 people at Nandail Police Station on February 28, 2015. Following the investigation and trial, the court handed down the verdict.

Public Prosecutor Anwarul Aziz Tutul confirmed the matter.
