Chattogram Port Authority has warned of legal action against any attempt to disrupt port operations amid protests against handing over the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) to foreign operator DP World.

A contract with DP World for operating the NCT is scheduled to be signed on Thursday (October 8).

A day earlier, on Wednesday (October 7), the port authority issued an emergency notice signed by its Director Md Nasir Uddin, warning all concerned against disrupting port activities.

The notice said all operational activities of the port must remain fully normal and uninterrupted in view of the planned agreement with DP World. If anyone attempts to disrupt operations, senior authorities must be informed immediately and action must be taken under existing laws and regulations.

Md Nasir Uddin said ensuring normal and uninterrupted port operations is very important.

“Any attempt to disrupt operations will be dealt with according to the law.''

Meanwhile, the Port Protection Struggle Council and several labour organisations held a rally and torch procession in front of the port building on Wednesday evening, protesting the handover of the NCT to a foreign operator.

The protesters demanded that the NCT be operated under local management and that workers’ interests be protected.

They announced that they would continue their programmes unless the decision to appoint a foreign operator is cancelled or reconsidered. As part of the programme, they have announced a procession and rally in front of the port building at 3:00PM on Thursday.

The port authority has instructed all concerned to remain alert and ensure normal operations continue amid the protest programmes.
