Bangladesh has formed a dedicated committee on water cooperation with India and requested New Delhi to nominate its representatives to initiate formal discussions.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir shared the information on Thursday (October 8) while responding to queries at a seminar titled "Rethinking the Future of Water: Youth Leadership, Justice, and Cooperation," organized by the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) in Dhaka.
Humaiun Kobir emphasized that Bangladesh seeks a fair share of water resources grounded in international legal frameworks. He stressed the need for effective communication and dialogue between relevant officials of both nations to bolster bilateral cooperation on water-sharing issues.
Referring to the Ganges Water Sharing Treaty renewal, the State Minister noted that Bangladesh has requested India's list of nominees so delegation-level talks can commence. He expressed optimism about receiving a prompt, positive response from the Indian side, which would pave the way for advancing discussions on the next phase of the treaty.
He added that a spirit of mutual cooperation between the leadership of both countries can yield a friendly solution to water disputes through diplomacy and continuous dialogue.
