Police have recovered the body of a 44-year-old man from a rooftop room of a five-storey building in North Shahjahanpur in the capital.
Police suspect that a longstanding property dispute may have been behind the killing.
Deceased Fakhrul Hossain Farhad was found lying in a pool of blood inside the rooftop room in front of Amtala Jame Mosque on Wednesday night.
According to family members, Farhad’s wife, Shampa, had left for work while her husband, who was ill, remained at home. She returned later that night and found his bloodied, motionless body on the floor. Food and other items were scattered around the room.
The couple had been married for around 15 years.
Farhad’s younger sister, Nur Afsana Hasan Nitu, alleged that the victim had been involved in a long-running dispute over the property with their elder sister Nur Afsana Hasan Nipa and her husband, Sujon Sarker.
She alleged that Nipa and Sarker had repeatedly threatened Farhad and pressured him to leave the house. Farhad was reportedly threatened with eviction just two days before the murder, she said.
Police believe the killing may have taken place on Wednesday evening. However, investigators are also examining whether any other motive was involved.
Sujon Sarker, identified by the family as the main suspect, has reportedly gone into hiding, while police have taken his wife Nipa into custody for questioning.
Harun-or-Rashid, deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Motijheel Division, said investigators were examining multiple possible motives.
“We have learned that there is a property dispute, but we are also looking into whether there were any other issues,” he said, adding that the actual motive would be determined after investigators collect and verify evidence.
