A 68-year-old man was killed while trying to settle a family dispute at his daughter’s in-laws’ house in Barlekha upazila of Moulvibazar on Thursday night.

The incident took place in the Chaturpar area of Gallasangon village on October 8. The deceased was identified as Abdur Rahman, son of the late Haji Israk Ali of Mathiura Arengabad village in Beanibazar upazila.

According to local sources, Rahman’s daughter is married to expatriate Munna Ahmed, son of the late Tota Mia of Gallasangon village. Munna’s brother, Omar Faruk, had been involved in a long-standing dispute with family members over the proceeds from the sale of trees and land.

Rahman went to his daughter’s in-laws’ house on Thursday night to mediate the dispute. During an altercation, Omar allegedly attacked him with a machete, leaving him critically injured.

Relatives rescued Rahman and took him to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where the attending physician declared him dead.

Barlekha Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Moniruzzaman Khan confirmed the incident, saying the body’s autopsy had been completed at the hospital.

He said legal action would be taken if the deceased’s family filed a case with the police. Efforts were underway to arrest the accused, he added.
