The body of a fisherman who went missing after falling from a trawler into the Payra River in Amtali upazila of Barguna was recovered by river police on Friday two days after the incident.

The body of Md Omar Ali Gazi, 55, was recovered from the river near Tetulbaria area under Nishanbaria Union around 9:00 AM on Friday.

Omar Ali was a resident of the Locha area under Ward No. 9 of Amtali municipality.

According to river police and local sources, Omar Ali fell into the Payra River near Locha on Wednesday (October 7) at around 10:30 AM while retrieving an ilish fishing net and other equipment. He went missing following the incident.

Another fisherman accompanying him, Jalilur Rahman, tried immediately to rescue him but failed.

After being informed, police, firefighters and officials from the upazila fisheries department jointly conducted a rescue operation but could not locate him.

Two days later, local fishermen spotted a floating body in the Payra River near Tetulbaria in neighbouring Taltali upazila on Friday morning. River police, with assistance from local residents, recovered the body and brought it ashore.

Later, members of Omar Ali’s family arrived at the scene and identified the body.

The deceased’s brother, Akkel Ali Gazi, said the family had been searching different parts of the river since Omar Ali went missing.

“After receiving the news on Friday morning, we came to the Tetulbaria area and identified the body by the surgical scar on his abdomen,” he said.

Sagar Bhadra, in-charge of the Taltali River Police Outpost said, the recovered body had been confirmed as that of missing fisherman Omar Ali.

He added that further legal and necessary measures would be taken in line with instructions from the higher authorities.
