Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu has said work on the Teesta mega project will begin in 2027, raising hopes of fulfilling a long-cherished dream of the people of Rangpur.

He made the remarks while speaking to journalists after addressing a foundation stone-laying ceremony for the Shaheed Abu Sayed Gate at Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur on Friday afternoon.

The minister said the government did not want any region of the country to face discrimination. He also pledged to establish industries in Rangpur to accelerate the region’s development.

Recalling the sacrifice of Shaheed Abu Sayed, Dulu said his sacrifice had laid the foundation for building a democratic Bangladesh. He added that the government was committed to utilising the opportunity created through the sacrifices of hundreds of martyrs to establish equality, freedom and social justice.

Describing Abu Sayed as a pioneer of the democratic movement, the minister said the impact of his sacrifice had spread across the country and contributed to the fall of an authoritarian regime.

Welcoming the initiative to build a gate in memory of Abu Sayed at the university entrance, Dulu said it would help future generations learn about his sacrifice and preserve his memory.

Regarding various problems at the university, he said the issues were being identified and steps were being taken to resolve them.

Abdullah Al Mamun, a member of the University Grants Commission, Begum Rokeya University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Showkat Ali, teachers, students, senior university officials, journalists and political leaders attended the programme.

Later, the minister attended a memorial meeting at Rangpur Shilpakala Academy marking the first death anniversary of Anisur Rahman Laku, former member secretary of the district BNP.
