Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has strongly rejected a claim that its Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar owns 700 auto-rickshaws, describing the allegation as imaginary, false and baseless.
The party’s Assistant Secretary General and Secretary of its Central Publicity and Media Department, Advocate Ahsanul Mahboob Zubair, expressed the protest in a statement on Friday afternoon.
The statement said the party had taken note of remarks by Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan Milton about a political party’s secretary general owning 700 auto-rickshaws. Reports published on Friday appeared to refer to Jamaat Secretary General and former lawmaker Mia Golam Porwar, it added.
“We strongly condemn and protest the dissemination of such imaginary, false, baseless and fabricated information,” the statement said.
Zubair said the public expected responsible, fact-based and decent remarks from a government official. He said any serious allegation that a senior political leader personally owned 700 auto-rickshaws should be supported by specific and reliable evidence.
Making such remarks without presenting credible evidence to the public was not responsible conduct, he added.
He also said issues involving auto-rickshaw operations, traffic congestion, road discipline and drivers’ livelihoods should be addressed in light of the facts and public interest. Any political party’s position on these issues should be challenged with arguments, evidence and practical measures rather than unsubstantiated allegations against its leaders.
Jamaat called on the DNCC administrator to present specific and verifiable evidence supporting his remarks. If he failed to do so, the party demanded that he withdraw the statement and publicly apologise.
