Mumbai Police detained Mahatma Gandhi’s great-grandson Tushar Gandhi on Saturday (October 10), while he was heading to a planned protest in support of a demonstration in New Delhi, Indian media reported.
Tushar Gandhi, president of the organisation Hum Bharat Ke Log, was picked up from Bandra and taken to the DN Nagar police station, a police official said. He had planned to hold a gathering at August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai in solidarity with the Cockroach Janata Party’s (CJP) protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi.
The protest was aimed at demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in electoral rolls.
Police said no permission had been granted for the planned gathering. While Tushar Gandhi described the action as an arrest in a post on X, police maintained that he had been detained.
