Barcelona may have reason to be concerned about Italian referee Marco Guida ahead of their Champions League match against Galatasaray, as the Spanish club have failed to win either of the two European matches he has officiated.
The match is scheduled for Tuesday night at Ali Sami Yen Stadium in Istanbul. Guida, 45, will serve as the main referee, while compatriot Marco Di Bello will be in charge of the video assistant referee (VAR) system.
Guida is one of Italy’s experienced referees. He began officiating in 2010 and received FIFA international referee status in 2014. This season, the Galatasaray match will be his third assignment in European competitions, following an earlier Champions League qualifying fixture.
Guida has previously officiated two of Barcelona’s European matches, with the Catalan side recording one draw and one defeat.
Last season, Barcelona drew 1-1 with Newcastle United in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie under Guida’s supervision. Earlier, during the 2022–23 Champions League group stage, Barcelona suffered a 3-2 defeat away to Belgian club Royal Antwerp on December 13, 2022.
Galatasaray’s record under Guida is also evenly split, with one win and one defeat in two matches. Last season, the Turkish club lost 5-1 to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League league phase.
The referee’s previous record with both clubs adds an extra point of interest ahead of Tuesday’s encounter.
