Ronaldo reveals little-known bond with Messi

Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed that his long-standing rivalry with Lionel Messi has always been accompanied by mutual respect and a friendly relationship.

In an interview with CNN Portugal, excerpts of which were published by The Athletic, the Portuguese superstar recalled helping Messi with English translations during Ballon d’Or ceremonies.

“We shared the stage for 15 years, and our relationship was always very good,” Ronaldo said. He recalled translating questions and instructions for Messi during media events, describing those moments as amusing.

Ronaldo stressed that their rivalry never affected their mutual respect, as both players focused on winning for their respective clubs and countries.

Reflecting on their best years, Ronaldo compared their competition to the legendary Formula One rivalry between Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost.

“It was healthy competition. I think we inspired each other,” he said.

Messi has won a record eight Ballon d’Or awards and the 2022 World Cup, while Ronaldo has won five Champions League titles, compared with Messi’s four.
