The Ministry of Education has published an admission policy for government and private secondary schools, setting age limits for students seeking admission from Class I to Class IX for the 2027 academic year.
Under the policy released by the Secondary and Higher Education Division on Tuesday, students will be admitted to Class I through a lottery, while admission to Classes II to IX will be based on admission tests.
According to Clause 2 of the policy, the minimum age for admission to Class I will be five years and the maximum seven years as of 1 January 2027. The policy refers to the National Education Policy 2010, which sets six years as the standard admission age for Class I.
The age limits for other classes will be determined accordingly. Applicants must submit an attested copy of their online birth registration certificate with the admission application. Children with special needs may receive an age-limit relaxation of up to five years.
The policy sets the following age limits for admission:
- Class I: 5–7 years
- Class II: 6–8 years
- Class III: 7–9 years
- Class IV: 8–10 years
- Class V: 9–11 years
- Class VI: 10–12 years
- Class VII: 11–13 years
- Class VIII: 12–14 years
- Class IX: 13–15 years
The 2027 academic year will begin on 1 January and end on 31 December. Each section of a class will have a maximum of 55 students.
The policy will apply to admission to the entry class, Class I, and to all classes up to Class IX where seats are available.
The policy was signed by Tania Ferdous, deputy secretary of the government secondary-1 branch of the ministry.
