Football fans can vote for the best Ballon d’Or-winning season of their favourite players, but each vote costs one euro.
The Ballon d’Or organisers have launched a special poll inviting fans to choose the most memorable Ballon d’Or-winning season of 10 legendary footballers. The poll is not for selecting this year’s winner but for identifying the best season of past winners.
The list includes Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ronaldo Nazario, Marco van Basten, Michel Platini, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Kevin Keegan, Franz Beckenbauer, Johan Cruyff and Alfredo Di Stefano.
Unlike the usual Ballon d’Or award, which is decided by selected international journalists, the special poll gives fans a chance to express their preferences. Each vote costs one euro, and fans can vote for the same player more than once by paying for each additional vote.
Cristiano Ronaldo is currently leading the poll. The Portuguese forward won his first Ballon d’Or in 2008 after helping Manchester United secure the Premier League and Champions League titles. That season remains a favourite among supporters.
Messi’s 2012 season is in second place. The Argentine star won his fourth consecutive Ballon d’Or that year, following an outstanding individual campaign in club football.
Messi has won the Ballon d’Or eight times, while Ronaldo has claimed the award five times. The poll allows fans to select the finest Ballon d’Or-winning season of their preferred player rather than simply deciding which of the two stars is better.
Voting opened on the Ballon d’Or’s official website in early October. According to the organisers, fans can cast their votes until midnight on October 27, Paris time.
The organisers have also clarified that the result should not be treated as a definitive verdict on the greatest season in football history. Instead, it reflects the preferences and opinions of those taking part.
