US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has urged Russia and Ukraine to focus on finding a negotiated solution to end their war, pledging that Washington will continue working towards a lasting, sustainable and just settlement.
Rubio’s remarks come amid renewed debate over US diplomatic efforts to end the conflict and Washington’s approach to sanctions against Moscow.
During a visit to Portugal on October 8, Rubio described the war as having reached a dangerous stalemate, warning that the conflict could trigger a wider regional confrontation and pose risks to neighbouring NATO member states. He stressed the need for a negotiated end to the fighting.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has temporarily suspended plans for new sanctions and tariffs against Russia. His administration has cited a review of their potential economic impact and efforts to keep Moscow engaged in negotiations.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, however, has warned that easing pressure on Russia could embolden Moscow to pursue further aggression. Differences have also emerged between Washington and Kyiv over Ukraine’s attacks on Russian energy infrastructure and the US sanctions policy.
Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Despite repeated diplomatic initiatives to end the conflict, the two sides have yet to reach a lasting settlement.
