At least 30 people were injured in a series of clashes between two groups at a Bedey settlement in Kaliganj municipality of Jhenaidah over alleged drug trading and dragon fruit theft.

The clashes began on Monday night and continued until Tuesday afternoon, according to police.

Kaliganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Zulfikar Ali confirmed the incident.

Police from Kaliganj Police Station and the district police lines were deployed to bring the situation under control. The clashes triggered panic in the area, forcing several families to leave their homes over security concerns.

According to local residents and police, the dispute began after locals detained a man over the alleged theft of dragon fruit from the Mobarakganj Railway Colony. Based on information provided by him, another man named Mizan, who is accused of involvement in drug trading, was also detained.

However, instead of handing the men over to police, the locals released them following discussions, leading to tensions between residents of the Bedey settlement and local inhabitants.

On Monday night, a group allegedly led by Monirul Islam, a community leader from one section of the settlement, and local residents Imam Hossain Lavlu and Reza vandalised several business establishments.

On Tuesday morning, local residents gathered and allegedly detained and assaulted several people, including Shamim Hossain and Imam Hossain Lavlu, over the reported attack.

Police arrived at the scene and attempted to restore order. Additional personnel were later deployed as tensions escalated.

The injured are receiving treatment at Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex.

OC Zulfikar Ali said additional police had been deployed to maintain order and that the situation was now normal.
