The decision to recall Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Japan, Md Daud Ali, was taken by the Foreign Ministry on its own, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam said on Saturday.
She made the remarks while speaking to journalists at the CIRDAP auditorium in the capital on October 24, on the sidelines of a national dialogue and the launch of a position paper ahead of COP31.
Shama said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is expected to visit Japan from October 26 to 29 at the invitation of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. She hoped the visit would help attract more investment to Bangladesh.
Speaking about COP31, she said Bangladesh continues climate adaptation efforts despite limited resources and aims to highlight the global potential of eco-friendly jute products alongside the energy transition.
She stressed that developed countries must fulfil their climate financing commitments, with assistance primarily provided as grants to prevent further debt burdens on climate-vulnerable countries.
Shama also called for a fund to address climate-related loss and damage, stressing the need for a unified voice in global negotiations.
She said the Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Environment and Climate have formed an inter-ministerial focal team to coordinate climate and environmental activities, adding that young environmental activists could also be involved.
